Crossroads: Helping Dogs & the Community

Neighborhood shop sells animal products, but also provides grooming, adoptions and assists young adults

I would walk or drive by Crossroads and think, “wow, that’s a cute shop. I need to check it out and buy some dog treats.” Little did I know that Crossroads does a whole lot more than sell animal products. After stopping by, I discovered they also provide dog grooming, help shelter dogs and assist young adults with internships and housing. They even sell their own dog treats! I spoke to Samantha who gave me more information on everything Crossroads.

Crossroads began when three people came together and saw the connection between humans and animals. Emmylou Harris was a big part of that. She talked about homeless people and animals, and Crossroads just grew from there.

Adoptions

Crossroads currently has a partnership with Metro Animal Care & Control, taking the small and fearful dogs from large, loud and stressful shelters and bringing them to their quiet and calm facility. Once at Crossroads, the dogs get plenty of one-on-one time with staff and interns. When the canine is ready for adoption, potential adopters can meet them by appointment and fill out an adoption application. The Adoption Coordinator will sort through the forms and contact approved applicants.

Internship & Housing

Crossroads provides paid, job-training internships to young people between the ages of 17 to early 20s. Interns help run the store and care for the adoptable pets, gaining real-world experience. Crossroads believes that every person should have the opportunity to become a beneficial and productive member of the community.

The Crossroads Campus Affordable Housing Program for young adults consists of 4-bedroom units with a shared kitchen and living area. Residents are referred to the program and receive intensive weekly individual and group case management. Internships provide employment & residents are required to pay rent to help sustain the program and learn to live independently.

Dog treats

Not only do the interns help with the shop and adoptions, they also bake dog treats! The treats are not only homemade, but they are baked with healthy ingredients. I’m sure your dog would love them!

Crossroads is always thinking of the bigger picture: they don’t just foster animals, they also foster individuals in the community and provide them with a safe place. All the proceeds of the retail store and grooming services go back into supporting Crossroads’ mission of improving the lives of the youth and animals in their community. You just don’t shop at Crossroads, you purchase with a purpose!
